What Is the Wax on Apples?
Pick up an apple and you might notice that the skin feels smooth, shiny or particularly waxy.
Some of that wax is produced naturally by the apple as it grows. Some apples may also have a food grade wax applied after harvest to help maintain quality during storage and transport.
So what's the wax doing there, and can you wash it off?
Why are apples waxy?
An apple's skin has a protective outer layer called the cuticle, which contains naturally occurring waxes. These help protect the fruit and reduce moisture loss while it's growing.
After harvest, apples are typically cleaned as part of commercial processing. This can remove some of the wax already on the surface, so a thin food grade coating may sometimes be applied afterwards to help reduce moisture loss and maintain quality.
In Australia, glazing agents used on fresh fruit and vegetables are regulated as food additives. Approved glazing agents include waxes such as carnauba wax and beeswax, as well as shellac.
So the waxy feeling you notice on an apple can come from the fruit itself, an applied food grade coating, or a combination of the two.
Can you wash wax from apples?
Yes. Washing and gently rubbing an apple can help lift waxy material from its surface.
How much is removed will depend on the apple, the type of wax present and how it is washed.
If you prefer to wash away some of that waxy feel before eating your apples, giving the surface a thorough wash is a simple place to start.
Why does water bead on an apple?
You've probably noticed that when you put an apple under the tap, the water doesn't always spread evenly across the skin.
Instead, it often forms little droplets and rolls away.
The waxy surface is part of the reason. Water has a relatively high surface tension and doesn't interact particularly well with oily or waxy surfaces, so it tends to bead rather than spread.
Water is still useful for washing apples. But the way it behaves on a waxy surface helps explain why rinsing alone may not always feel like a thorough clean.
Wax isn't the only thing on the surface
Apples go through growing, picking, packing, transport and handling before they reach your kitchen.
Along the way, soil, dust, oils and other everyday residues can be present on the surface. Depending on how the fruit was grown, agricultural chemical residues may also be present.
So while wax might be the thing you can see or feel, it's only one reason you might choose to wash an apple before eating or cutting into it.

Where does Plantaera fit in?
Waxy and oily produce surfaces were part of the thinking behind Plantaera.
Plantaera was formulated specifically as a fruit and vegetable wash, with the surface characteristics of fresh produce in mind.
Plantaera is a concentrated fruit and vegetable wash designed to help lift everyday dirt, oils, waxes and common pesticide residues from the surface of fresh produce.
Its concentrated, lipid based formula is designed to work with water and help it interact more effectively with the surface of fruit and vegetables, particularly where oily or waxy materials are present.
Plantaera wasn't developed around removing one particular type of residue. It was designed as a dedicated washing step for the different things that can be present on the surface of fresh produce.
Add one pump to a litre of water, wash for around 30 seconds, rinse thoroughly with fresh water and dry as usual.
The bottom line
If you notice a waxy coating on your apples and prefer to wash some of it away before eating them, washing can help lift waxy material from the surface.
And wax is only part of the picture. Dirt, oils and other everyday surface residues can all be part of the journey fresh produce takes before it reaches your kitchen.
